Tooth Fillings

Tooth Fillings

Dental fillings, or technically called “obturation”, are typical conservative dentistry treatments used to restore damaged teeth. This process involves the removal of tooth decay so that disease does not develop and affect dental nerves, resulting in the need for a root canal or endodontic treatment.
Due to advances in technology, today’s dentists and patients have a variety of options to choose from regarding dental procedures. And it is also worth noting that they have the freedom to choose where they will be treated. In this regard, many Europeans choose Albania as their first choice for dental treatment or emergency dental care. In addition to its cost, which is considerably lower than in other countries, and the professionalism that is offered by clinics in Albania. One of the clinics that can help you achieve the perfect smile, and restore your mouth functionality to the fullest is Amaris Dental Clinic.
Next, we will detail the steps that make up this process.

How are they placed?

A tooth filling is a simple and relatively quick treatment, which takes between 40 and 50 minutes.

  • Anesthesia: Before starting the operation, the dentist will perform local anesthesia if necessary. That is, this technique is used when tooth decay is very developed and affects the dentin.

  • Cleaning the tooth cavity: By removing the diseased part of the tooth, you may leave a cavity that needs to be filled later.

  • Filling the cavity: Composite materials are often used to fill the cavities that remain after cavity cleaning. Once the dentist has finished filling the cavity, he or she will apply light to harden the material.

  • Polishing and occlusal adjustment: After completing the previous step, the filling is polished and a bite test is performed. In this way, we ensure the best esthetic and functional results.

Types of dental fillings

  • Composite resin filling: One of the most commonly used alternative methods to eliminate cavities is composite resin fillings. This is an exceptional procedure, mainly because it is simple and painless. There are many reasons to use composite resin, for example, the materials we are dealing with are mainly known for their strength and durability.

This is one of the reasons why it has become one of the most widely used materials in the dental field, besides being used as fillings, it will also be of great help for other interventions. Another key factor when choosing a composite material is that it respects the esthetics of the patient’s teeth because its color is very similar to the color of the other teeth.

  • Gold and porcelain: Dental restorations with gold and porcelain fillings require indirect techniques, the restoration laboratory must fabricate the pieces to size, so multiple appointments must be made at the clinic, so the cost is high. But they have excellent durability.
  • Silver amalgam: The restoration with silver amalgam filling is performed by direct technique, which is placed on the same day of dental caries, and in one visit.

Compared to composite resin or glass ionomer fillings, the main advantages of amalgam fillings are their durability, the strength they can withstand, and the cost (generally lower). Their main disadvantage is the poor esthetics they provide because they are metallic, the extensive destruction of tooth structure to accommodate the filling and the discoloration that results in the surrounding tooth structure.
