Pit And Fissure Sealant

Pit And Fissure Sealant

Pit or fissure sealants are one of the most commonly used dental treatments in pediatric dentistry because they are a very effective way to prevent tooth decay. Careful brushing and flossing will help remove food particles and plaque on the smooth surfaces of the teeth. However, toothbrush bristles cannot completely reach all the depressions and grooves to remove food and plaque. This is why the pit and fissure sealant method of prevention is used for.

When should fissure sealants be placed in teeth?

Pits and fissures in posterior teeth account for 80% to 90% of all cavities. Sealants reduce the risk of these susceptible areas and the use of sealants in children and adolescents reduces the incidence of dental caries by 80%. They are particularly effective in children and teenagers because their newly erupted permanent teeth are more prone to decay. However, this treatment is not only for children but also for older patients. This is still appropriate because fissure sealants can help protect teeth and maintain better oral health. In any case, the fissure should be sealed after the dentist’s evaluation.

Types and function of sealants

There are two types of crack sealants: resin and glass ionomer. The latter, in addition to sealing, also releases fluoride, so that through them we can strengthen the teeth. The sealant acts as a physical barrier and prevents the accumulation of bacteria and organic debris. They also hinder the supply of nutrients to existing microorganisms. It is very necessary to carry out good control, strict and regular maintenance to ensure the effectiveness of the sealant.
The application of sealants is a complementary measure to prevent dental caries, which includes proper education in dental hygiene, diet and sugar control, use of fluoride, and constant inspections. That is why it is so important to check your oral health at a dentist regularly. It is also important to use fluoride when brushing your teeth, because fluoride prevents decalcification of all tooth surfaces, while sealants only protect the occlusal surface.

How is fissure sealant treatment performed?

The process of applying the gap sealant is very simple and painless (no anesthesia is required), and can even be performed in a single visit to the dentist. To do a dental seal, the dentist firstly cleans the surface of the teeth that are going to be sealed with a small brush and isolates them to prevent them from being contaminated with saliva, otherwise, it may compromise the success of the operation. Then the bonding technique takes place, which consists of applying substances and materials to “glue” the resin to the tooth (by light-curing so that the resin hardens quickly), which will act as a sealant and maintain the adhesive state. This way the patient doesn’t have to wait very long in order to consume anything (eat or drink).

Not all posterior teeth (such as molars and premolars) need a fissure sealant because not all teeth have deep fissures. After the evaluation, dental sealants will only be applied to those teeth that the dentist deems necessary.
In this regard, professionals will perform a dental caries risk assessment based on their clinical experience and a series of indicators, such as tooth shape (shape and depth of fissures), clinical diagnosis, and history of dental caries and patients’ oral hygiene habits.
