Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of diseases of the periodontium.
Periodontal diseases or periodontal problems target the gums and their surroundings. These include the tooth, the alveolar bone, the root cementum, the periodontal ligament, and the dental root.
Poor hygiene and poor removal of oral calculus will develop bacterial colonies that will end up in the gum root. Therefore, inflammation will grow based on the infection and generate the disease known as Gingivitis.
This must be treated as soon as possible and in a proper way, or it can go to the second stage of reproduction called periodontitis, the most difficult disease to treat when we talk about periodontics.
Periodontal disease, periodontitis, or even called pyorrhea, is the worst stage of gingivitis. This is seen from the swelling of the gums, extending to the ligaments and the dental base that supports the dental line.
It eats and infects the entire area until the tooth is no longer stable and falls out due to tissue necrosis. Although it is very common, it is quite dangerous and is even one of the first reasons why teeth fall out in adults.
Scaling and root planning and even periodontal surgery are essential in these cases so that they do not become critical. At Amaris Dental Clinic we can take care professionally of every issue related to your oral health. What are you waiting for when you can have a stunning smile and improve your oral at the most affordable budget?
Do I have gum disease?
To determine if you have developed periodontal disease, you should look at your gums in the mirror and be guided by their shade. If you notice that they are somewhat swollen and have an unnatural reddish color, you may have caught some disease.
In addition to this, there are also some common signs, such as your toothbrushing not lasting with a pleasant smell as long as it used to. If your gums are more sensitive and even if when chewing food, solid or otherwise, or you feel pain, you may be going through the dental disease.
Symptomatology:
The first professional assessment when checking for periodontal disease, gingivitis, or periodontitis, is a visual examination. In this way, the specialist can verify the circumstances in which the gum is. Since, as we mentioned before, bleeding, swelling, and redness of the tissue around the gum is an evident sign of the presence of periodontal disease.
This is followed by a further examination in a periodontal clinic. This is done with a dental probe, which helps to perform an odontogram in each base of each tooth of the patient, so its evolution will be considered and it will be decided which ones will be intervened.
There are some serious cases where in addition to these examinations, a radiological search and even a microbiological study of the bacteria present in the oral cavity will be performed. This is only used for periodontal disease in a very advanced and aggressive stage.
What complications can periodontal disease lead to?
Believe it or not, periodontitis or gingivitis can wreak havoc on a person’s overall health. Common risks include increased vascular problems, destabilization of diabetes, lung or respiratory infections, and in the case of pregnancy, can lead to miscarriage or premature birth.
It should be noted that periodontitis breaks down the soft tissue or base that supports the tooth. This creates a receptivity of the bones and develops deformations in the immunocompetent cells, also on others that participate in the prevention of inflammations.
People who suffer from diabetes already have a decrease in salivary fluid, therefore tartar and dental plaque accumulate in greater quantity in the teeth causing cavities, infectious cells, and periodontal diseases.
Both diseases have similar risk factors that can be moldable, such as smoking, severe obesity, among many others. These are closely related to the patient’s lifestyle. Therefore, the treatment of periodontal disease should have additional guidelines to help patients to avoid habits that are detrimental to their health. Such as the elimination of tobacco, sugar, and even the implementation of the exercise. This will help their overall health, including the gum area.
