  • Night Guards: These devices are mainly made to stop Bruxism. Bruxism is a disorder that comes into being as an excessive area activity, where you may clench or grind your teeth while you sleep or go about your daily life. It is totally involuntary. Bruxism occurs when teeth come into contact with each other through force. Its main causes are excessive stress or insomnia. Although there may be external factors such as diet and even malformation of the teeth.

The main function of the Dental Night Guard is to prevent friction or grinding that can occur when you sleep. This splint is made in the laboratory using previously obtained impressions. The mouth guard used for bruxism is made of biocompatible transparent acrylic that is completely harmless to our organism. They are usually about 2 or 3 mm thick.

  • Sports Dental Guards: People who practice contact sports are more likely to suffer dental fractures. In this type of activity, falls and collisions are frequent, so it is not surprising that one of these effects damages our oral area.

The sports mouthguard is used to prevent the jaw from colliding when receiving a blow. It can even prevent serious blows that can cause fractures, lesions, and even hemorrhages. The device can remove soft tissues in the mouth from the teeth and help to prevent cuts and bruises on the lips and cheeks, especially in people with braces.

What are the different types of mouthguards?

  • Prefabricated mouthguard: This type of mouthguard is the least expensive option, but provides the least protection due to its limited accuracy. Having to close the lower jaw to keep it in position can interfere with speech and respiration. Prefabricated braces are not suitable for facial protection.

  • Oral cavity-fitted protectors: These masks are molds that must be boiled and bitten into the shape of a mouth. The mold is lined with acrylic or rubber, when the product is placed in the person’s oral cavity, the material designed for the guard will cause the teeth to mold to it immediately and will be non-removable.

  • Custom mouthguard: This type is customized by your dentist to provide the best protection, fit and comfort, as it is made from a pre-made mold.

Mouthguard Care and Replacement

  • Rinse before and after each use, or brush with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

  • Wash frequently with soap and cold water. Then rinse.

  • Store the mouthguard in a thick, well-ventilated container to dry it and prevent bacterial growth.

  • Be sure not to place the mouthguard near hot areas, in the sun, or in hot water.

  • Check it for convenience, signs of wear, and if it needs to be replaced.

  • Some mouthguards can be picked up by pets and made into shreds, as they are very similar to chew toys. It is therefore important to store the mouth guard and its packaging out of the reach of children and pets.
