Invisible Orthodontics or Invisalign

Invisible Orthodontics or Invisalign

Smiling is a quality that can define a person’s face. People who smile often are considered more charismatic and confident. But, there are individuals who cannot afford to show off their radiant smiles because they are not satisfied with the shape their teeth have taken over time. And it is not only the color that is a problem, but also the dental composition. This is usually one of the main factors when it comes to showing our smiles to the world.

That is why dental tourism in Albania will always be a good option since we have specialists in the area of orthodontics, which will make your smile like new for a totally affordable price.

The Invisalign technique is very recent but extremely effective. A series of aligners or brackets are used, which as the name suggests, are transparent. These are completely custom-made and adjustable, with the great quality of being removable. An effective and safe way to align the teeth, without the need for wires or metal braces. Which are usually noticeable to the naked eye, damaging facial aesthetics.

It is important to emphasize that they should be worn for 22 hours a day, except at mealtime. And they must be changed two weeks after their habitual use. One of the qualities that give it being a current technique is the benefit of being able to carry and show the patient a virtual treatment guide, in 3D. This allows showing the movements that the patient’s teeth will follow on a screen, to know the final result of the treatment without having started it yet.

The ClinCheck is one of the fundamental elements that help differentiate Invisalign from other types of orthodontic treatments. This is computer software that, in addition to guaranteeing a good follow-up of the dental treatment, also allows the movements of the dental pieces to be redone throughout the treatment. In addition to this, it can predict the result of the orthodontic treatment before the first step of placing the dental aligner in the oral cavity.

How are invisible brackets placed?

There are multiple methods of placing invisible brackets on the market. But the most notorious is based on placing the brackets on the outside of the oral cavity, by a splint that receives the name of “Adhesive Tray”. After that, they can be transferred to the teeth. The second technique is called “Direct Bonding”. It consists of placing the brackets one by one on each of the patient’s teeth. This has the quality of forcing the patient to keep his mouth open while the treatment is applied, extending the process more than usual.

The placement process is fundamental and must be carried out perfectly because if a mistake is made or it is not well done, the bracket may tend not to hold correctly and the tooth will not form as planned.
In order to proceed with the placement of invisible brackets, the following steps must be taken:

  • 3D scanning: the patient will be scanned to obtain the measurements of the oral cavity, and the correct structure of his or her teeth. This is followed by sending records to the factory, from a digital image.

  • Bracket design: Once in the factory, the brackets are designed in something called a “bonding tray”.

  • Preparation of the oral cavity: Once the invisible brackets are ready, and the patient is in a consultation room to place them, the teeth are prepared. This step helps to place the product with adhesive properties on the dental piece and fix them, in order to keep them in place in a better way.

  • Placement of the invisible brackets: Once the adhesive is fixed to the teeth, we can place the adhesive splint, -where the invisible brackets are already fixed- and we will keep it in the oral cavity for several minutes, never ceasing to press on the patient’s teeth. In this way, we can transfer the brackets to the tooth.

  • Positioning and placement of the archwire: Once the invisible brackets are installed, we will proceed to place the archwire. Usually, the use of the dental arch is done in two dental consultations. Mainly the lower brackets are installed and after one week the upper brackets are placed.
How many types of Invisalign are there?

Depending on the intensity or complexity of the malocclusion and the age of the person, we can apply three types of Invisalign:

  • Invisalign Lite: It is the most used in the simplest cases of malocclusion, it usually lasts an estimated 12 months. This version is usually worn by people who have already worn braces in the past. However, for whatever reason, they did not wear the required retention and their teeth became misaligned again.
This type of patient often requires treatment based on dental alignment. The jaw and bite problem was previously taken care of and remains in good condition.

  • Invisalign Full: This is an alternative more adapted to patients who have never worn orthodontics and require some corrections. Both in alignment and in the biting action. This treatment usually lasts about 12 to 24 months. However, the patient may need to wear braces for longer than the estimated time.

  • Invisalign Teen: This is an advanced version made especially for teenagers and children. Like Invisalign Full, this technique is created to correct any type of malocclusion, so it takes an estimated 12 to 24 months. As in the last case, they may need to wear the appliance even longer than the estimated time.
In addition to this, Invisalign Teen adds a collection of helpful elements for the target audience: children and teenagers. In fact, the aligners have a wear guide, which can make it easier for parents to keep track of how long their child wears the appliance.

Attachments and their function

The attachments are small composite lifts that must be fixed to the tooth. These attachments have the function of making the treatment more effective because sometimes dental aligners do not have the capacity to make the movements by themselves.

In other words, the aligners need these small composite lifts to be able to use more pressure and rotate the teeth. There are several types of attachments with respect to their size, shape, or use. That is to say, it depends on the attachment to be used which movement it will help to employ. The use of the attachments depends on the patient, so not all wear the same size, nor are they on the same dental pieces.

It is common not to wear the same attachments during the whole treatment. They are changed according to the requirements of each treatment process. When the alignment is completed and the treatment is finished, all the dental attachments are removed.

Advantages of the invisible aligner

As you can imagine, the advantages of invisible aligners are enormous. Let’s get to know the most important ones:

  • Regardless of the type of aligner you need, they are all fully customized. To achieve this, a 3D study of the mouth is needed. Based on that, it is possible to imitate the movement that the patient’s jaw will have.

  • This type of invisible device can be molded and moved in the mouth.

  • It can be removed for eating and brushing teeth for better hygiene and other important events.

Each invisible aligner must be replaced every 7-10 days. However, this seems like a long-term disadvantage and in reality, it is not, because you always have a new appliance, making it more hygienic.

Disadvantages of invisible braces

  • In order for it to develop in the best possible way and on time, it must be used at least 22 hours a day. Reducing the process required to ingest both food and beverages, in addition to performing daily dental cleaning routines.

  • It is strictly forbidden to ingest food and beverages other than water with the splint in place. To do this procedure, the invisible braces must always be removed, so doing it constantly can be overwhelming.

  • As it is a removable orthodontic, there is a risk of leaving it somewhere and losing the brace. This is one of the many responsibilities of having braces.

  • If the patient has or suffers from bruxism, the constant movement of the jaw can affect and even deform the splint, which can affect the proper development of the treatment.

  • Being an advanced technique, the price of invisible orthodontics is usually a little more expensive than a traditional orthodontic or braces application. As mentioned before, each bracket will be custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth.
How are they cleaned and maintained?
  • While this treatment is in effect, it is not only of great importance to try to keep the dental caps in a good state of transparency. It is also important to take responsibility for their hygiene and for our mouths.

  • A mistake that everyone usually makes is to brush their teeth after eating and then put the transparent caps back on without having previously sanitized them. Although cleaning our teeth is a good measure to keep bacteria at bay, dirt tends to accumulate in the prosthesis and therefore will pass into our mouth. This favors the development of periodontal diseases.

  • When removing the aligners, it is recommended to wash them only with cold water and soap. In addition to this, they should not be brushed with toothpaste, as they may lose their transparent characteristic. The most advisable thing to do is to brush them with a soap containing a neutral pH and a single toothbrush in order to clean the remaining small cracks.

  • It is not recommended to soak the sleeves in mouthwash, as this is not designed for the hygiene of our aligners. It should be noted that it is common for these to become stained and tend to become damaged after practicing this technique. It is always advisable to put the aligners back in their case after removing them.

Although it should be noted that the aligners will be changed within a few days of use, so they are not likely to darken or become damaged quickly. In any case, these tips are of vital importance to eradicate bad taste in the mouth, bad breath and to provide good dental hygiene. It is important to note that in case of detecting any discomfort and irregularities in the aligners or in the oral area, it is important to call your doctor immediately. And it is even important to go voluntarily once a year to ensure the proper development of dental orthodontics.

Asked Questions about Invisalign

Invisalign is a modern and innovative treatment method. It consists of an aligner that is replaced from time to time, instead of the well-known normal treatment method with brackets. Patients often have many questions about it, so here we will clarify some of them:

  • The aligner can break: It is not common for the aligner to break, but one of the splints can break due to bumps or other conditions. The first thing you should do is call the consulting department to discuss your case and solve the problem as soon as possible.

  • Is Invisalign suitable for everyone? When we use invisible orthodontics, cooperation is very important. You must wear the locator every 22 hours a day and change it very accurately every 14 days. If we are not responsible and consistent, then it is best to use regular braces.

  • How long does treatment last and how many aligners do I need? The duration of treatment with Invisalign depends on the exact type of malocclusion the patient has, although there are many other factors that influence the duration of orthodontics such as the patient’s age, the type of technique to be used, the patient’s commitment, the gingival condition, among others.

Treatments usually last between 18 and 24 months but can last up to 36 months on specific occasions when more time is needed to adequately correct the malocclusion.

  • Is it possible to smoke with splints? Although aligners should be removed at the time of smoking, at the time of practice it is usually different. But this should not be common if the person is an active smoker. Since he/she should wear the splints for approximately 22 hours a day. So, by taking them off constantly, at the end of the day the estimated minimum hours cannot be met. In addition to this, it is extremely important to keep in mind that tobacco can turn the dental veneers yellowish in color and possibly create the appearance of staining. It is best to discontinue smoking or risk not removing the splints.

  • Does Invisalign hurt? As stated above, the development of adaptation is more reduced with Invisalign than with braces. Since dental aligners are usually more comfortable to the dental cavity and do not have metallic elements that can interfere with the mouth, as happens with brackets. Thus, there is no possibility of an impacted wire or the proliferation of sores, wounds, or scratches. But, although this treatment is painless, it cannot eliminate the fact that the first few days will be difficult to get used to. This is due to the fact that the pressure exerted by the aligners, however little, is noticeable. However, this usually disappears little by little after 4 or 5 days of using the treatment.
