Gum surgery or periodontal surgery is a treatment that is applied when periodontal disease is at a critical stage and has advanced to an irreversible point.
Periodontitis is chronic; it develops from bacterial plaque accumulating in the tooth lines, killing the soft tissues in and around the tooth. From this, periodontal pockets are created on top of the tooth that accumulates much more bacteria and tartar.
In the process, this bacterial plaque makes its way through the gum canals and breaks down the bones and tooth bases, and, as mentioned above, necrotizes the soft tissues around the tooth and gums. Causing the rotten or affected tooth to fall out when the bacteria have finished gnawing away at the inside of the tooth.

Periodontal surgery procedure
To prevent premature tooth loss due to periodontitis, we ultimately resort to periodontal surgery, which is performed at the end of the basic approach to periodontal disease.
This surgery aims to remove the affected and inflamed soft tissue, eliminate the infectious elements and restore the bone and gum base.
The tartar and dental bacterial plaque at the base of the gum, which after consultation and examination, is confirmed that cannot be removed with the basic treatment, is removed.
The main method is called “scaling and root planing”. Once this first treatment has been completed, a re-evaluation is planned one to one half a month after the procedure. From there, the dentist or periodontist will decide between the success of the operation or taking the patient to periodontal surgery, in case the plaque remains inside the periodontal pockets.
Usually, the surgical method is applied in the posterior area of the mouth, as the cleaning of the molars is more complicated to perform both for the patient and in the case of the periodontist when performing the root planning or scaling.
It should be clarified that this operation is not due to the bad practice of an orthodontist or periodontist, but to the existence of a wider periodontal pocket that cannot be completely cleaned; tartar embedded in the dental roots of the molars, and even poor hygiene after the scaling and root planning procedure.
What types of periodontal surgery are there?
Within this term, there are several branches to be covered depending on the requirements of the patient. Among them we can observe:
What should I do after periodontal surgery?
At the end of periodontal surgery, the periodontist or dentist will provide the patient with a guide depending on their particular case. Although it is possible to make a small general list, which fills in all possible post-operative care for each patient without special extras:
Once the stitches are removed, you will be able to brush your teeth as usual and with great care.
If sufficient professional control is not established, it is very possible that a relapse will develop, despite effective periodontal surgery.
It has already been mentioned that periodontitis or periodontal disease progresses exponentially and has the power to irreparably damage your teeth if it is not treated in time. Therefore, prevention is our best ally in the fight against them.
It is essential to maintain good dental hygiene, and keeping it strenuously prevents further complications with your dental cavity or tooth line, not only periodontitis is to be feared.
The first laws to avoid disease in addition to thorough dental hygiene are to see your dentist regularly. Any doubts you have about the subject, it is best to discuss them with a certified specialist.
