Gum Flap Surgery

Gum Flap Surgery

Dental flap surgery is the most commonly used surgical treatment for periodontal disease nowadays. If it cannot be solved with antibiotics or scaling and root planning, we will proceed to use it. It has an 80% success rate and it is considered very reliable.

Dental flap surgery takes care of sanitizing the roots and soft tissues of the tooth and regenerates the affected bone. The operation is performed by a periodontist or maxillofacial surgeon.

At the dental clinics in Tirana Albania, we specialize in making your smile its best version. We are the best choice in the whole European continent because of our low prices and high quality. Don’t let us tell you about it, visit us and confirm it!

Surgery procedure

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, applied only to the area to be treated. After this, the periodontist will move the dental sections aside to proceed to clean the dental root and clearly restore the tooth if necessary. The dental flap will then be readjusted and covered with gauze for the next few hours.

The bone during the procedure may be flattened and regenerated so that dental plaque has no place between the teeth, the specialist may also need to place an alternative graft of synthetic material to help the new growth. The alternative veneer can be removed a few months after the operation.

What to expect after surgery

In a successful procedure, recovery happens within a few days after surgery. It is important to follow your dentist’s or maxillofacial surgeon’s guidelines for home care of the sutures. If in doubt, it is best to call the specialist again.

  • General recommendations for a successful recovery are:

  • Take specific pain medication, either painkillers or other medication recommended by your doctor.

  • After the first 24 hours of the operation, the oral cavity should be rinsed with salt water at room temperature 2 or 3 times a day. This helps to reduce inflammation and may even reduce pain.

  • Change the gauze every so often, as the accumulated blood will only cause the already open wound to become infected after treatment. Ideally, allow 3 to 4 hours to pass before changing the gauze.

  • Relax after the procedure, stay calm and not do too much activity. Constant movement or unnecessary exertion will increase bleeding and break the blood plug in the gum, causing constant bleeding.

  • Keep an eye on your diet, it is best to maintain a soft food diet for the first few days post-operatively. As well as creams, pastes, and gelatine. After 5 days, you will be able to incorporate solid food little by little.

  • When sleeping, you should not lie horizontally. This will cause bleeding to develop.

  • Maintain good dental hygiene, brush the tongue and teeth carefully so it doesn’t affect the healing process.

  • Apply cold objects, such as compresses and even frozen food to the cheek area. This will help to reduce dental inflammation.

  • Do not force or suck on liquid food or even water.

  • Eliminate smoking from your daily routine, as the smoke is highly toxic and can result in possible infection.

A few days after the procedure, your dentist will remove the stitches.

Possible Complications

In any operation or surgical intervention, there are complications, either at the hands of the patient, the specialist or even unexpectedly caused by the disease itself. Some of the most frequent problems with this intervention are:

  • The dental root can become more sensitive, because of the harmful intervention on the dental base and distortion of a nerve. Also, the contour or shape of the gums may change.

  • Dental surgery can attract and introduce dangerous bacteria into the bloodstream. This makes the risk of infection in the gum tissue much more likely. To avoid this, painkillers and antibiotics are recommended in the days before and after dental surgery. Mostly if there is a pre-operative disease such as diabetes or a heart deformity that jeopardizes the success of the operation. Reasons for taking antibiotics range from:

  • Having heart conditions, whether mild or severe. Therefore you are at risk of acquiring a heart infection called endocarditis.

  • Having a low and ineffective immune system. This makes it easier for harmful organisms to pass through.

  • You have undergone major surgery, or have had body parts amputated, and therefore have artificial alternatives. Whether it’s a hip, heart valve, or something else directly connected to your body.

If you take good care of your teeth after surgery, the flap procedure should allow you to clean your teeth and gums better. Your gums should be pink and healthy again.

Committed to Excellence

Dentistry is a science divided into multiple fields. One of them is the restoration of teeth in the dental camp.

Pediatric dentistry or pedodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves children from birth through adolescence.

Dental orthodontics does not only seek to align teeth uniformly just because they are crooked or have an unaesthetic image.

When we talk about oral surgery, we refer to all surgical procedures that are applied in and around the mouth and jaw.
